We describe the early research activities in quantum field theory in Brazil, focusing on the pioneering work of Gleb Wataghin, Mário Schenberg, José Leite Lopes, and Jayme Tiomno. We then make a chronological jump to describe the outstanding contributions of Jorge André Swieca to the area.
